Dipping and washing pips in holy water contaminated with human waste: 'devotees drinking water unfit for bathing'
It was echoed in the Indian Parliament as well, and Jaya Bach Chan, a member of parliament and former famous actress in the upper house, questioned the government and said, "Currently, the most polluted water is at the place of the Maha Kumbha in Prayagraj.
"He is being severely trolled on social media by terming his statement as anti-Hindu religion. And after the debate on the matter escalated, India's environmental body, the National Green Tribunal, sought a report from the Central Pollution Control Board stating that the confluence water in the Kumbha area is unfit for human bathing.
According to a report submitted by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), high levels of faucal coliform (bacteria from human and animal excrement) have been found in the water of the holy river. This is the water report from the same place where millions of Hindu pilgrims, including Narendra Modi, have taken holy ablutions during the Maha Kumbha in recent times.
The NGT, in its order regarding the report on February 17, has said that the river water quality was not up to the standard for bathing due to the presence of faucal coliform (FC). Due to the large number of people bathing in Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbha Meela in the river, the concentration of faces (human waste) in the water has increased.
Importantly, however, many famous personalities of India and thousands of ordinary pilgrims are arriving here for this holy bath, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political, religious and showbiz personalities and millions of ordinary Hindu pilgrims.
It should be noted that 30 people were killed in the stampede caused by the crowd on January 29, according to official figures, while the opposition claims that the death toll is much higher.
